In his best selling book Influence, Dr. Robert Cialdini a Professor of Psychology at Arizona State University describes how a University professor tried a little experiment. He sent out Christmas cards to a sample of strangers.  Although he expected a response, he was surprised to be inundated with return Christmas cards from people who had never heard of him!
